The IC-R30 far outperformed the SDS100 and rarely stopped, opened squelch without good clear voice traffic. Walking down the street, sitting inside or even both hooked up to similar outdoor antennas, and before anyone asks yes ive tried swapping the antennas (outdoor) on the SDS and HT. Ive got the remtronix and still sucks.As others have pointed out, the speaker is of course smaller in the portable. But in either case, connecting an external speaker nullifies that difference. That works if you are picking a specific choice, such as Normal, Wide Invert, Global, etc. But if you are using Auto, the display only shows "Auto", not which choice it found was the best match.
